Jai Shri Krishna!
Welcome to all my holy readers. Here is another capturing blog on the upcoming festival of Janmashtami. We know that it is the day when Shri Krishna appeared on earth.
About Janmashtami
Shri Krishna is amongst the popular avatars of Lord Vishnu who appeared in Dwapar Yuga. The day is celebrated as Janmashtami which marks the eighth day or Ashtami tithi of Bhadrapad month according to Hindu calendar. This festival usually falls in the month of August during Krishna Paksha (waning moon).
Further, Shri Krishna appeared in the Rohini Nakshatra during midnight in Mathura. Later, he was shifted to Gokul by his father Vasudev. Though born to mother Devki Lord Krishna was brought up by mother Yashoda and father Nand.
Celebration Rituals
Everyone knows about the festival of Janmashtami as the birthday of Shri Krishna. However, there is much more to this. People and followers of Hindu dharma residing in India and abroad celebrate the day in different styles. Moreover, fasting is a common ritual along with worship of ladoo gopal (baby Krishna).
What to Do
- Whole day fasting: You must observe fast for the entire day. Falahaar meals including fruits, dry fruits, milk, curd and potato can be consumed. Moreover, avoid wheat, flour, green vegetables, spicy food and other regular eatables.
Non-veg, alcohol, onion and garlic are strictly prohibited.
- Sing Devotional Songs: Devotees must sing Krishna bhajans or participate in group kirtan. Chanting of Mahamantra (Hare Ram Hare Ram, Ram Ram Hare Hare, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare) is the best activity. Listen, read and speak about Krishna’s life.
- Decoration: Janmashtami is an occasion for celebrating a birthday. Decorate a corner or a temple area in your house. Moreover, participate in the decoration of nearby temples. Make garlands of flowers, rangoli and other creative things.
- Cook Prasadam: On Janmashtami, fasting is observed for the entire day. People cook prasadam for Krishna bhog after birth. Food is cooked with utmost purity. Sweet Panjiri is the main highlight on this day.
- Panchamrit Snan: At night just at the time of birth do, “panchamrit snan” ritual of Ladoo Gopal. Panchamrit includes milk, curd, cow ghee, sugar (bura) and honey along with pure water or possibly gangajal.
- Aarti Pooja: After Ladoo Gopal takes bath, do shringar with various ornaments, tilak, chandan and perfume (itra). Now, he is ready for the “Aarti” ritual. Sing Krishna Aarti and ring the bells. Later, offer Makhan misri bhog to Krishna.
What to Avoid
If you are a devotee of Krishna and observing fast on Janmashtami then strictly refrain from following things:
- You must stay away from non-devotees.
- Must keep control of temper, do not speak lies or get involved in deceitful conversation.
- Stay away from greed, violence or attachments.
- Do not consume alcohol, non-veg food and spicy food.
Interesting facts
We say Krishna appeared on earth as his arrival is considered divine. He was on a mission. Many say that he came to kill Kansa and other devils. He came to rid earth from devils and fix Dharma (duty) on earth. While from the learned resources Krishna’s arrival on earth was for his beloved Devotees.
Further, he appeared to protect his followers from evil. Krishna can avoid evil but cannot ignore a devotee (bhakt). If his bhakt is in pain or is suffering due to demons, Krishna cannot ignore it. So, Krishna appeared for bhakts and to keep his words.
Moreover, his appearance was planned for Dwapar Yuga as Lord Ram’s principles were not meant for the changing time. This also teaches us that one’s behaviour is meant to change with time. To deal with the given situation, terms and conditions we can adopt the behaviour required during that time.
In addition to this, Janmashtami is not the only day when Krishna was born. Though Janmashtami is related to every moment when Krishna appears in your mind, heart and finally soul. The very moment is Janmashtami when Krishna appears in thoughts or one experience’s self-realization.
